House Rules
The BRC-CC believes in practical martial arts. Techniques should be applicable to real self-defense situations. To test whether or not certain techniques are effective or not, we believe it is imperative to train with contact and to compete. Training with contact can be dangerous and requires care for your training partners. The following rules will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

  • A respectful attitude is the basis of all training.
  • Appropriate safety gear should be worn at all times.
  • Training partners make you better! Work together and display a cooperative attitude.
  • Tap - it is better to tap during practice and train the next day, than it is to be injured.
  • Only sport legal moves are allowed while sparring.
  • We are at Burning Man - lets have fun! Take care of yourself and your partners!
  • Please remove all jewelry and have your nails trim.
  • We recommend t-shirt and shorts, gi-pants, or other loose pants. For your feet we recommend tennis shoes, wrestling shoes, or bare feet.

Learn
The first hour of class will be instructional and focus on the basics of a given topic. We are doing this to educate the general public and allow beginners a chance to learn and participate. Advanced players are encouraged to come and stay for the second hour of class - which will be an open mat session. Each class will begin with a warm-up and then lead into technique instruction. After basic instruction we will practice drilling the moves taught. The class will conclude with light sparing or partner exercise.

Share
After the basics class each day, we will be holding an open mat where advanced players are welcome to share their own techniques, discuss/drill advanced moves, and further spar. We insist that if you want to participate in the open mat, you must also have attended one of the basics classes or otherwise know the instructors. We do NOT want people coming in and trying to prove their skills by abusing our students. This is a training environment - we are all here to learn and share!
